Thanks John,
I just left a comment on that article asking how much slower the AA1 is running from the USB rather than the solid state hard drive, because if thee is little difference you are in the ideal position to do distro and version comparisons.

I've never tried the Fluxbox desktop on 'any' distro, I've tried E17 and XFCE (2 other 'lite' desktops) based distros though not Mint... it will be nice to hear what the differences are from the 'main' mint version, you might want to try the XFCE version of mint and see how this performs... from what I gather XFCE is more 'feature rich' (elegant) than Fluxbox but probably not quite as quick... a kind of half way measure.
A write-up of the differences between the 3 as far as features and performance would be nice.
E17 (enlightenment) I didn't really like, at least for my 'oldish' laptop, blisteringly quick but very spartan until you start to add the 'stuff' you want/need and VERY configurable, so I suppose it you can be bothered to mess with it until you get it 'just right' it would be great, but 2 problems... A)I can't be bothered, and B) NO optimised mint version (although it can be made to run on mint)

Thanks for the great information Mark.

I'm currently testing the FluxBox version of Mint 8 and it's really quick.
Although the front end isn't as elegant - My AA1 has never run quicker, even under Linpus. A further article will follow during the week.

Cheers

Update on Gnome 3:
Ubuntu 10.04, and therefore Mint 9 looks VERY unlikely to have the Gnome 3 desktop, as Gnome.org are stating a release date of September (so probably in 10.10), also on Mark Shuttleworths (Ubuntu owner) own site there are now pics of a rebrand (new look) for 10.04 which still shows the Gnome 2.x desktop with new themes... I read somewhwere that there will be a Win7 style 'aero glass' option which will 'glassify' toolbars windows etc. right down to widget level (sounds nice but might be hardware intensive... but it's optional), 10.04 WILL be a LTS (long term support) release .. ie. supported for 5 years .. so if 10.10 with Gnome 3 is a bit 'heavy' for AA1's, you will be OK for at least 5 years... one last thing shuttleworth says that 10.04 boots faster tha 9.01 (even says 10 secs on average PC) so mint will probably be even quicker.

Shttleworths blog (homepage?)

for a look at the rebrand (and desktop images):

Hi Mako

Have a look at http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12593
They recommend programs called Audacity and sound rec.

The thread also mentions doing a software update to make the mic work.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Great site and valuable info for the AAO. I have the basic Linpus version- 8 gig flash HD, 8 gig extended SD, 512K RAM. My onboard microphone never worked, but also I've never got any audio recorder to work- there was a post about an audio recorder for it, but it didn't unpack, or said it wasn;t correct version. DO YOU KNOW SOME SIMPLE AUDIO RECORDER (wav, mp3, wma, any)?????

I'm a journalist doing radio reports and it would be invaluable to record interviews in excellent original digital audio that doesn't need to be converted. Most small digital audio recorders are terrible quality low resolution sound- need at least 1meg/minute quality.
