How to activate How to install Wireless in Linux Mint on the Acer Aspire One
In this post I explained how I installed Linux Mint on the Acer Aspire One.
The first thing I noticed is that although the wired network connected fine, I couldn’t get the Wireless interface to work.
The solution wasn’t straight forward but should be quick and easy with these instructions.
To fix the Wireless Network interface on the AA1:
- Click on The Menu Bar in the bottom left hand corner.
- Got to the Administration section and then select the Windows Wireless Drivers Application.
- Enter your Administrator Password if required
- Click on Install New Driver and this box will open.

- Navigate to /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/drivers/i386/Atheros_AR5007eg and choose the inf file that’s there. Click on install.
- After a couple of moments the driver will be loaded and will appear in the driver window.
Restart your Acer Aspire One.- You will now be click on the network icon in the bottom right hand side on the screen and you will be able to see your wireless network(s)

John, you are spot on. Linpus is getting dated and I cannot install stuff as easily as I can using other distros. So I have followed your advice and have installed Mint Linux. It is great. Getting wireless to work is easy with your instructions. I also noticed that the fancy compiz effects work much simpler and better than under linpus. It took me a while to get Skype installed though. I am not sure what in the end did the trick, but after running the update manager the ubuntu .deb package seemed to installed fine, while before it could resolve dependencies. There is one niggle which has been amply reported and that is that the built in mic does not work. I have tried everything until I was blue in the face, but no luck. Maybe some of your readers have solved it?
Hi Herman, Mint Linux is really good, and certainly flexible as well as stylish.
I’ll look into the Mic issue and report back here.
Cheers
John
