I had tried installing VLC from the Aspire site and it installed OK but would not play videos, only the sound of videos. I had tried numerous sites and tips from other sites and nothing worked because of incomplete info, bad or incomplete or out of date links or an assumption that people knew what they were doing with Terminal. The basic assumption one should make when advising people with Linpus and Aspire One is that most people use it for its simplicity as a netbook. So after numerous failed attempts trying to install, uninstall and load dependencies, files and downloads I tried your approach and it loaded and installed the full box of dice and it now works. Or perhaps I now know a little bit more about terminal and managed to bumble may way through for once. I do get one minor error message on loading VLC: Unable to open '%U' But it still seems to work. Any clues on what it may be or whether its important? Anyway, thanks again for putting all the miscellaneous advice together into a complete step by step process for us Dos/Windows generation non-skilled computer occassional users that just want things that just work. Please don't feel like a numpty, Linpus is so locked down that it can be a pain in the neck for everyone. the good thing is that after you get it sorted then it performs well (given its a netbook anyway) VLC plays MPEG-4 without problem. (unless Acer have altered their version) do you have another video you can try just to prove that it's not VLC? Do you get an error message when you try and play your video? It might struggle playing Itunes protected videos though....although I've not tried it. I'm really want to get you up and running. Cheers John M Hi Gill.

VLC plays MPEG-4 without problem. (unless Acer have altered their version) do you have another video you can try just to prove that it’s not VLC?
Do you get an error message when you try and play your video?

It might struggle playing Itunes protected videos though….although I’ve not tried it.

I’m really want to get you up and running.
