Installing VLC Player on the Acer Aspire One
I wanted to add a better video player to my AA1, to support more formats, and the general opinion is that VLC is one of the best players out there.
However a number of people have issues installing it on the Acer Aspire One.
Acer have released a version through their site but it is missing a number of supported formats, so it’s bets to install the full version.
I found a blog which outlined the entire procedure split across 2 posts, so I thought that I would post the entire procedure here.
My source of info is
http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/11/installing-vlc-09-on-aspire-one-linux.html
and
http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/09/updated-repositories.html
Here is the Procedure:
- Open a terminal Window. (press Alt & F2, click in the run in terminal box, and the click run)
- Type
sudo yum install fedora-release - Press enter.
- Type wget http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/updates/8/i386/rpmfusion-free-release-8-6.noarch.rpm
- Press enter.
- Type sudo rpm -U rpmfusion-free-release-8-6.noarch.rpm
- Press enter
- Type sudo yum install vlc mozilla-vlc
- Press enter
VLC player will now be in the Advanced Menu.
Hope this helps

Hi John – me again ! (from Songbird forum). I’ve completed the above tasks to install VLC, but am coming up against dependancy problems.

I’ve double checked your dependancy source link, and Terminal confirms that :
Package fedora-release – 8-6.transition.noarch is already installed.
Nothing to do
Any thoughts ?? This is the last piece of software I want to install, and as usual, it isn’t going smoothly !
thanks
gill
Hi Gill
I’ve left a message for you in the songbird thread as well as I dont think you should give up on it just yet, many Linux users have got it working.
did steps 4 and 6 work ok above?
Cheers
John M
Hi Gill,
If you are having a problem with my method of installing VLC player, Acer have their own method, which may be easier.
Have a look at http://www.acer.com/aspireone/support/files/fun.html#002
This may be a quick win, or at least give us a clue
thanks John. I’ve installed it from the acer link above.
But it still won’t play the MPEG-4 video I’ve downloaded onto the hard drive (or the itunes library). Maybe I’m just trying to get it to do things that it can’t do ! (sigh) I feel like a real numptie !
g
Hi Gill.
Please don’t feel like a numpty, Linpus is so locked down that it can be a pain in the neck for everyone. the good thing is that after you get it sorted then it performs well (given its a netbook anyway)
VLC plays MPEG-4 without problem. (unless Acer have altered their version) do you have another video you can try just to prove that it’s not VLC?
Do you get an error message when you try and play your video?
It might struggle playing Itunes protected videos though….although I’ve not tried it.
I’m really want to get you up and running.
Cheers

Ive updated the procedure slightly – this should solve any difficulties.
Thank you for your site and stepwise advice on this. I had tried installing VLC from the Aspire site and it installed OK but would not play videos, only the sound of videos. I had tried numerous sites and tips from other sites and nothing worked because of incomplete info, bad or incomplete or out of date links or an assumption that people knew what they were doing with Terminal. The basic assumption one should make when advising people with Linpus and Aspire One is that most people use it for its simplicity as a netbook. So after numerous failed attempts trying to install, uninstall and load dependencies, files and downloads I tried your approach and it loaded and installed the full box of dice and it now works. Or perhaps I now know a little bit more about terminal and managed to bumble may way through for once.
I do get one minor error message on loading VLC:
Unable to open ‘%U’
But it still seems to work. Any clues on what it may be or whether its important?
Anyway, thanks again for putting all the miscellaneous advice together into a complete step by step process for us Dos/Windows generation non-skilled computer occassional users that just want things that just work.
