How to install Google Earth on the Acer Aspire One

I like exploring on Google Earth, it’s good for checking out places I have been to, planning future visits and virtual exploring ;-)

Google have made a Linux version but I found it difficult to install and run, it would launch but then close straight away.
How ever I found a solution here, which I’ve incorporated into the following installation procedure.
It does involve installing an earlier version of Google Earth but most of the functionality is there.

1. Click on this link and download Google Earth to your Downloads Directory.
2. In the Files section of the desktop open the My Downloads folder.
3. Go to the File Menu and choose terminal.
4. Type sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin and then press return.

Google Earth will now install and place an icon in the Network section of the Advanced menu.

I have installed Googleearth on Ubuntu Jaunty and the app starts but the icons are gray and there is no picture data. I am puzzled and this has happened each time I have installed it in Linux. No data at all, as though I need to download something else.

Hi there. Which version of google earth are you installing?
I don’t have much experience in ubuntu but I’ll see what I can find out for you.

    Cheers

There is an extra “http” in the googleearth link above which needs to be removed. The terminal kept telling me thta no google earth file existed even though i could see it in the downloads folder. Once i typed the sh command exactly with all the capitals GoogleEarthLinux.bin etc it worked. A font file used by google earth is missing from linpus it seems but Google earth seems to work ok without it.

    Thanks for the comments Jim.

I’ve updated the links, looks like a copy and paste issue from when I moved site.

    Many thanks
