How to install freeciv on the Acer Aspire One

Further Update: Please check out this post for a method to play FreeCiv on the Acer Aspire One.

Also Seth has left a comment with another potential solution. Check it out

Please note – This procedure no longer works since the end of support for Fed 8. I’m currently looking for an alternative method.

One of my favorite games on the PC is Civilisation, So I was keen to get FreeCiv working.

Unfortunately when I installed FreeCiv from the Add\Remove programs option from the Advanced Menu, the application runs but the screen is to large to fit on the screen and the game is unplayable.

I found the solution here : http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7157

Here it is below:

1. Install a repository containing freeciv for Fedora 8. At time of writing, this can be installed from: (old version http://dnmouse.org/repo/Fedora/ajrepo-2-2.noarch.rpm) http://files.andyjamison.com/linux/Fedora/10/i386/ajrpms-1-3.noarch.rpm – download and run through FireFox – you will need to type in your Password

2. Open a Terminal and type: sudo yum install freeciv-client-sdl freeciv-server

3. Start freeciv (its added to the Advanced menu as games->freeciv).

4. Edit the options to 1024×600 fullscreen.

Enjoy

Unfortunately the link to the rpm no longer works. Do you know of another place this can be downloaded? Would a different (newer) version of Fedora work?

Hi Sibecker – it looks like support for Fedora 8 has been terminated.

Unfortunatly I am on a short vacation for the weekend and don’t have access to Linpus.
Leave it with me and I’ll see what I can find out about compatibility, I’ve asked on a Forum so hopefully I’ll find an answer quickly.

    Cheers

I think I’ve found a new home for the RPM at http://files.andyjamison.com/linux/Fedora/10/i386/ajrpms-1-3.noarch.rpm

Can you try it and let me know if it works for you.

    Thanks John M

Unfortunately, while I can install that rpm, it breaks yum because the webpage it points to for updates (http://ajrpms.info) is just a placeholder for Godaddy. It looks to me as though AJrepos has been abandoned.

    …seems to be a solution?

Thanks Seth – that looks very promising. I’m currently testing Jolicloud as an os – but will test the next time I’m running Linpus.

    Many thanks
