How to install a flight simulator on the Linux Acer Aspire One

Everyone likes a good flight simulator but they seem to be few and far between.
I’ve found one called Flight Gear so I thought I would give it a try.

The home page for the software is http://www.flightgear.org/

To install it I went to this site : ftp://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/flightgear/ftp/Fedora

You need to download and install the following files in this order:
openal-20050209-0.FC2.i386.rpm
FlightGear-0.9.10-0.FC.i386.rpm

How well does it work?
Well it looks very nice but my Acer Aspire One isn’t quite up to the job of doing it justice, and it runs very slowly.
Newer models my be able to cope better.

However there is an other option.

I’ve found a different flight sim called YSFlight and whilst the graphics aren’t as detailed as those found in Flight Gear the speed is much better and the AAO’s touch pad works quite well for control.

YSFLight is a free Download from http://homepage3.nifty.com/ysflight/aircraftsoft/aircraftsofte.html
There is now need to install it.
Simply extract the archive into a directory ( I keep it in my downloads directory) and run the YSFflight executable file with File Manager.

Instructions are included in an HTML file in the download.

Great site and valuable info for the AAO. I have the basic Linpus version- 8 gig flash HD, 8 gig extended SD, 512K RAM. My onboard microphone never worked, but also I’ve never got any audio recorder to work- there was a post about an audio recorder for it, but it didn’t unpack, or said it wasn;t correct version. DO YOU KNOW SOME SIMPLE AUDIO RECORDER (wav, mp3, wma, any)?????

I’m a journalist doing radio reports and it would be invaluable to record interviews in excellent original digital audio that doesn’t need to be converted. Most small digital audio recorders are terrible quality low resolution sound- need at least 1meg/minute quality.

    Hi Mako

    Have a look at http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12593
They recommend programs called Audacity and sound rec.

The thread also mentions doing a software update to make the mic work.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers
